Dirty Kanza 2018 - 5 Time Finisher

Image
I am not sure why, but I keep avoiding writing this post this year. I think it is because I finally reached my goal of finishing the DK200 five times. If you want the short version, here it is: I rode, it hurt, I finished. If you want the long version... Expectations: Going into the 2018 edition of the Dirty Kanza 200, I was more confident about my chances of finishing than any previous year. I had put in the time on the bike (over 2000 miles so far this year), and my average speed has been gradually increasing. Land Run, La Grind, and Maizie’s all went reasonably well. I was more prepared physically and mentally that I had ever been. I have the perfect equipment, the Salsa Cutthroat, and all of the waterbottle mounts a rider could want. Cramping is always a huge factor for me. How long can I hold them off? How bad will they get? Just so it doesn’t get too easy, my feet have started bothering me quite a bit this year as well. Anything over 50 miles and they get fai...

Lap the Lakes 2017 - They are Back, Baby!

I have been fairly happy with the my results in the cycling events that I have ridden in 201 8 7. [REVISION September 29, 2017: It has been brought to my attention, that I have not idea what year it is. I told you that I was a little out of it that day, and obviously it continued on for a few days after. Relax, it is only 2017, or did I just come back from the future and give you an update of what will happen? Only I know the truth.] Land Run 100: wet, cold muddy, I finished and had a great time playing in the mud. The EPIC (80): turned out to be a crazy day of pouring rain, hail, lightening, micro-bursts, and flooding that caused us to call the race, only 40ish miles in. Dirty Kanza 200: I had a great day on the bike and beat my previous best time by over 2 hours. 24hrs of Cumming (65): I had a good ride on my leg of the relay, even though my crank arm fell off with 5 miles to go, and I had to jog/walk/coast my way in. Pony Express Gravel Dash (75): h...

Land Run 100 2017: What a Freakin' Mess, and I Loved It

Photo © Shawn Honea After participating in the 2017 edition of the Land Run 100 in Stillwater, Oklahoma this weekend, I feel the need to share some thoughts. Where to begin? If you do not know what Land Run is, it is a 100ish mile bike ride starting and ending in Stillwater, Oklahoma. There is also a 50k run and a 50-mile ride. It is ran by Bobby and Chrystal Wintle, who also run District Bicycles. These two are two of the most genuine, giving, positive, motivated, people that I have the honor of calling friends. Stillwater Community: This was my third Land Run, and it is amazing to see how the community of Stillwater has embraced this event. Each year it seems to get behind the event more and more. To all of the volunteers who make this happen, a huge thank you! This is proof that good people with good ideas and a lot of work can transform a community. District Bicycles: What can I say, beautiful shop full of great people. When I finished, they brought me inside...
